I once found myself standing 15 meters in front of a grizzly bear. Dallas I were camping in Northern British Columbia and decided to hike up river to go fishing. My knee started to ache so we sat down to rest. When I looked up, over Dallas' shoulder, I found myself staring into the face of a massive grizzly bear. It was absolutely beautiful - the most magnificent creature I have ever seen. It was shiny and well, fluffy, for lack of a better word, with beautiful, long thick hair. I have never been so afraid in my life. I whispered to Dallas, "Bear... Dallas, there's a bear..". I'm sure I stuttered. Dallas slowly turned around. Later he told me he believed he would see a small black bear. The next few moments are a blur to me, Dallas stood up, grabbing the little .22 and the bear spray we had brought with us, placing himself in between me and the bear, as the bear took a step closer. Everything happened so quickly, a thousand tiny actions in a fraction of a minute, but looking back I just remember the stillness. Waiting. And then the bear circled in its place, and lay down.

Grizzly bears have shown up in Dallas' life in several ways since then. I believe Ursa is his spirit animal.

Apex predators are not only incredible creatures, they are vital to the ecosystems that they live in - please consider getting involved and helping to protect grizzly bears

The wolf is an invitation to find that still place inside your soul. That quiet knowing. He is a reminder to pause and breathe - to know you are powerful. You are enough.

Transformation. Energy. Release. Change. Healing.

Pain is a difficult thing - most of us build up layers of protection, emotional and physical, around our hurt. We hold ourselves in a way that avoids bumping these tender areas because we don't want to experience that pain again. And in holding it all in, we prevent ourselves from healing. Taking that leap, learning to release that tension, exposing that raw pain, allows us to release the hurt, move through it, and be transformed.

Pain. Anxiety. Anger. Depression. Frustration. Joy. Creativity.

To be human is to experience them all. Life is not tidy or simple. Sometimes I cannot separate one emotion from the other - they all blend together and build into a wave of energy that washes, jolts, grates, pours over and through me.
